Lithuania: JUREX Holds International Conference on Transportation Challenges and Publishes Commentary on CMR Convention

29 October 2019

JUREX Business Disputes Conference 2019

On the 15 October 2019, Law Firm JUREX held its annual Business Disputes Conference, which this year was dedicated to legal problems and challenges faced by the international transport sector. The conference took place in Vilnius and was attended by a number of representatives from Lithuanian transport companies.

Mobility Package,"Brexit" and recent major changes in legislation related to the employment of foreign nationals has strongly affected the international transport business in Lithuania and made Lithuanian entrepreneurs consider moving part of their business to other EU countries. As such, delegates welcomed presentations by Christian Steden, European Law Firm’s President and Partner at "Kärgel de Maizière & Partner", and Rafal Sarbinski, Attorney at Law at "Sarbinski & Sobczyk", on the establishment of transport companies and business environments in Germany and Poland respectively.

Jurgita Judickiene, Attorney at Law and Managing Partner of JUREX together with a representative of IT company ATEA, UAB introduced legal and IT procedures to prevent business information leakage. Other presentations covered highly topical issues such as the Mobility Package, the employment of long-distance drivers who are foreign nationals, plus debt recovery for the international freight services in Russia. Ivo Klotins, Attorney at Law and Managing Partner of "Klotini & Sergis" in Latvia, also gave an interesting presentation on the Court of Arbitration of Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as an alternative to litigation for transportation dispute resolution.

The focus of the conference was the presentation of a newly published Commentary on CMR Convention, authored by JUREX lawyers: Jelena Cvirko, Jurgita Judickiene, Olga Siomina, Mikolina Šoblinskaite and Arturas Vaišvila. This is the first and currently the only legal publication in Lithuania, which provides guidance on how CMR Convention articles should be interpreted and applied in various situations. Authors of the Commentary on CMR Convention worked hard to ensure that the guide is both useful and comprehensive not only for lawyers working in the field of transport law, but also for participants of the cargo transportation process: transport companies, consignors and consignees of cargo. As such, the publication also includes answers to frequently asked questions and a number of practical examples and samples of the main documents used in cargo transportation.
