On 2 March 2010, Kärgel de Maizière & Partner organized a reception in Berlin to celebrate the firm's senior partner, Lothar de Maizière's 70th birthday. Almost 400 guests attended the celebration, including Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, the former German President Richard von Weizsäcker and the First Vice Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Mr. Viktor A. Subkov.
In her speech, Angela Merkel, who was introduced into politics by Lothar, thanked him for his work as the last and democratic elected prime minister of East Germany, describing him as the "attorney who represented the East German people in the process of German Reunification". Lothar de Maizière was awarded the Russian order of friendship, the highest order granted to non-nationals, by Mr. Subkov in recognition of his promotion of German-Russian relations.
