Last month's general meeting hosted by Danish member Lexsos Advokater and held in Copenhagen was attended by representatives from nineteen member firms. European Law Firm (ELF) also welcomed a number of guest delegates from firms interested in collaboration.
Guest firms, namely KSP Consulting from Albania, Höhne in der Maur & Partner from Austria, Milanova & Partners from Bulgaria and Legal Firm no. 11 from Russia attended the event to meet the members and get a better insight into how the network operates.
Flemming Rose, the Danish journalist, author and cultural editor of Jyllands-Posten, began Friday's general meeting with an interesting and thought provoking presentation on the "Freedom of Expression in a globalised World". In 2005, Mr Rose commissioned the series of cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Muhammad and following the controversy has become an ardent promoter of free speech globally.
Sarah-Louise Green summarised the work of Central Office since the London meeting, highlighting in particular the referral of network matters between members. She also outlined some proposed developments to the ELF website and intranet and presented visitor statistics.
Ms Kalina Milanova from candidate firm Milanova & Partners presented her firm's credentials and requested membership of European Law Firm. The firm is medium sized with three qualified attorneys, an associate and a trainee plus access to four 'of counsel' lawyers for very specialist expertise. 80% of their clients are international and the firm offers advice in Corporate & Commercial law, M&A, Privatization, Joint Ventures, Energy & Utilities, Infrastructure & Transport, Real Estate & Construction, Environmental law, Liquidation & Bankruptcy, Labour, Tax, Litigation & Arbitration & Project Finance. Following a short question and answer session, delegates present voted unanimously in favour of accepting Milanova & Partners's request for membership.
The agenda also included an update from Patrick Goergen of Etude Patrick Goergen - Avocats à la Cour on the Real Estate White Book initiative, a summary of the work carried out by Claudio Ceriani and his team on the Debt Collection Initiative and an overview of host firm Lexsos Advokater.
Finally, Ivo Klotins of Klotini & Sergis and Antoine Naudi of Naudi Mizzi & Associates reported their experiences following the Riga Marathon. The European Law Firm team comprising of 16 runners from member firms in Latvia, Finland and Malta took part in the 5km, 10km race or half marathon. All participants crossed the finish line and are already looking forward to running again next year!
Delegates and guests alike had time to network more informally during Friday's Gala Dinner and Saturday's social programme.
