On 28 December 2010, Christian Steden, President of European Law Firm and Partner of Kärgel de Maizière & Partner was sworn in as a Notary Public by the Ministry of Justice.
Under German law a Notary undertakes many responsibilities across a range of different areas of expertise. In real estate, for example, any transaction relating to the purchase, registration of encumbrances etc. requires notarisation. In corporate law, any transfer of shares of a Ltd., the foundation of Ltd companies and any change in the articles of association require notarisation. And finally, a Notary will draft matrimonial contracts and wills. A Notary does not only certify the signatures, but is also responsible for the content of the documents he notaries which differs from some other jurisdictions.
Christian has acted as Uwe Kärgel's "Deputy to Notary" since 2003 and the evaluation of the applications alone has taken two years. This has however proved fruitful as Christian was placed 4th out of 70 applicants and certainly deserves our congratulations!
